FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT DO WE NEED TO BRING?
-- There are a few boogie boards available, some sand/beach toys for the kids, and a beach umbrella or two (in the entry closet).
-- We have established a new game cupboard, with a dozen or so games in it already. If you have any games that are gathering dust, please feel free to add them to our collection.
-- We have also assembled quite a reading library in the Office/Den, but there are still a couple of empty shelves. It would be great to get a few additional books for variety.
-- There are 2 working TVs with DVD/VCR players in the Living Room and the Office/Den. The TV in the Living Room has a Roku with lots of channels including Netflix and Plex. Our DVD and VHS selections are currently pretty slim. If any of you are getting rid of your VHS movies, they would be put to good use in 401.

HOW DO WE GET IN? Each Parent Sib has been provided with keys to the condo doors and the outside gates. You need to make arrangements through your parent. The clickers for the parking garage gate are in the the right drawer of the black credenza in the Blue Suite of Unit 401. Make sure they end up there when you leave!  There are THREE clickers and THREE sets of keys.

WHERE DO WE PARK?
Initially, you'll need to park in guest parking, which is located just under the building and before the parking garage gate. Once you've picked up a clicker in 401 (which opens the parking garage gate), you can park in one of our assigned parking spaces: 18, 19, or 20.

WHAT ABOUT INTERNET ACCESS?
 (updated info 22 June 2015)
Wireless internet access is available, so bring your laptop and mobile devices.  We are no longer sharing a connection with Unit 301.  The modem and router are on the pink side.  You will be able to log into the wireless router by the TV in Unit 401 with the following SSID:  "401 Pink".  When you're going to be primarily on the blue side you will likely get better signal by logging into the access point: "401 Blue".  If for some reason you cannot connect to either of these sources try "roynmyla" from the pink side.  The password for all connections is:

sanclemente

Note: there is no space. Type sanclemente as one word, all lower case.

If you have any problems, please call Paul at 949-698-7476 or 541-261-4645. (Yes it will ring in Oregon or wherever I may be).  I will help you get connected.  If no answer leave a number or email me and I'll call you back.  Call Paul first and he will give you specific instructions if the internet is down.  If the router, modem or access point needs to be "power cycled" you may unplug them, wait one minute then reconnect the power.    UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES IS ANYONE TO PUSH THE RESET BUTTON ON ANY OF THESE DEVICES AS THIS WILL RESULT IN REVERTING THE SETTINGS TO FACTORY DEFAULTS WHICH WILL RESULT IN YOUR NOT HAVING INTERNET AT ALL UNTIL THE DEVICES HAVE BEEN REPROGRAMMED.  YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED....

The internet is currently active on the Sony workstation in the office of the condo.  I have re-installed Windows on the Sony so it actually works now (if you're feeling lucky).  The printer connected to the Sony also works.  The power button is on the right hand side of the printer.  Turn off when not in use.

WHAT ABOUT VIDEO ENTERTAINMENT & TV? (updated info 12 December 2015)

TV Inputs: Cycle through with the TV/Video button (top left) on the Sony remote control.  Cox cable TV is no longer available.  Instead, try one of the options below:

Roku – Input 7
Chromecast – Input 6 (for streaming from your phone or iPad)
DVD (Magnavox) – Input 1
VHS is currently only available on the TV in the office.

There are working remotes for the TV, DVD, and Roku in the pink suite as of 12/12/15.  You can run the Chromecast device from your phone or iPad.  The remote for the LG Blue ray player no longer works.  For the office video devices there is a remote for the TV but you'll have to use the buttons on the players.  The VHS is hooked up with an RCA (Red Yellow White) cable.  If you want to use the DVD in the office you'll have to switch the connections.

Roku video streaming info:

Netflix – Unit 401 has a paid account. All content is no additional charge. To return to the channel menu press the arrow button then “Exit Netflix”. Netflix will stay logged in for the next user. DO NOT LOG OUT of the Netflix account. If you get logged out for some reason the password is “sanclemente.”  Call Paul if you have problems with the username or login.

Subscription channels: You can log into Amazon or other paid channels with your own credentials. Just be sure to log out or someone behind you might charge something to your bill.

PLEX - You may find streaming options available for a variety of commercial free TV shows and movies.  Use the servers that are there or run your own from your laptop.

You may now rent edited streaming movies on VidAngel.  The channel has been added to the Roku.

Mormon Channel and BYU TV are available with unlimited use.

A variety of news channels have been pre-selected. If you want to add an additional channel, go ahead if it's free. If there is a fee you'll have to get approval from Paul.  Good luck with that!

If anything is not working perfectly, call Paul before trying to fix it yourself. You will save both of us a lot of time and effort. 949-698-7476 or 541-261-4645.

AIR CONDITIONING? Yes and No. When you arrive it will be stuffy if the condo has been closed up for a while. Don't forget you're at the beach with a prevailing breeze. Most of the time, all you'll need to do to cool the unit down is open a few doors and windows and let the breeze blow all the hot air down the hallway (leave the entry doors open also). There really isn't any need for A/C 95 percent of the time. Also, if you feel compelled to turn on the A/C, be aware that the thermostat in the kitchen should NEVER be used because the unit will leak into the laundry room after a few minutes due to condensation drip. The drain is plugged and there is no way to access the drain to clear it. Best policy - leave it OFF! Update for Summer 2015 The A/C unit on the Pink side also leaks.  Best to leave them all off and use fans if you're hot or open windows and doors and enjoy the sea breeze.

IS THERE A PHONE IN UNIT 401?
There is no land line phone in 401. You'll have to use your cell phones.  If you bring your own Magic Jack Plus you can use an available jack on the access point in the office.

HOW DO WE GET HOT WATER FASTER?
There are hot water pump buttons (they look like door bells) located on the right side of the kitchen sink and in the Pink Suite bathroom. Push these buttons, and then in about 3 minutes you should have hot water. Update 2015: The pump under the kitchen sink never turns off, so it has been unplugged.    Please leave it unplugged.  Just rinse the dishes while loading the dishwasher and it will be hot by the time you turn it on.  Do not run the dishwasher with cold water - the dishes won't get as clean. There is a new water heater that has a "smart" mode to save energy. Sometimes that means you won't have hot water right away in the shower in the Blue Suite. We're still trying to figure that one out!

WHY DOESN'T THE OVEN WORK?
The oven does work, it just takes about 30 minutes to pre-heat properly. Plan your meals accordingly and please be patient with it. The bottom oven seems to work more consistently than the top.

WHERE DO WE EMPTY THE TRASH CANS? There is a trash chute on the 4th floor at the other end of the building. Go out the front door, follow the hallway to the end, where you should be facing a door. Open it and you'll find the trash chute. Do not put watermelon rinds or any other wet garbage in the trash compactor. It makes a terrible mess. Be careful that you don't "drip" or "spill" from your plastic bag of trash as you go down the hall to the trash chute. The plastic trash bags, which are made specifically for trash compactors, are in the low cupboard to the left of the trash compactor. Make sure everything you put down the chute is bagged (no loose refuse, please).

WHAT IF WE RUN OUT OF SUPPLIES?
Barbara has stocked the unit with paper goods and cleaning supplies for the upcoming year. If you notice an item that is beginning to run low, notify Barbara, so she can make arrangements to have it re-stocked (bjcolter[at]gmail.com) or call Paul to see if he will approve your purchase for reimbursement.  949-698-7476.

WHERE CAN I GET INFORMATION ON LOCAL THINGS TO DO? Check out San Clemente's website. It is a super website, including a live surfcam.

WHAT IF I LEAVE SOMETHING THERE? We have a cupboard in the Family Room that is labeled and dedicated to retrieval.
-- LOST and FOUND Put the things in this cupboard that you find left over from the previous group. And be sure to check this cupboard for your things, the next time you're in 401.
-- UP FOR GRABS This cupboard is for the things that anyone can take. Right now there is some goldy/oldy piano sheet music just waiting for a new owner.
-- PLEASE CLAIM These are the things that have owners and they need to claim them and take them home with them. Be sure to check this cupboard every time you are there.
